Voorhees to Buy Land to Fix Confusing Intersection
One of South Jersey’s most problematic intersections is set for a redesign in Voorhees, at the crossing of Route 73, Kresson Road, and Kresson-Gibbsboro Road.
This week, the Voorhees Township Committee gained an ordinance authorizing the purchase of a long stretch of land at 316 Kresson-Gibbsboro Road, which leads directly to the intersection.
The project comes as traffic in the area is expected to worsen. A Super Wawa, recently approved by the Township, will be built just north of the intersection on Route 73, with a driveway feeding into Kresson Road. Many residents opposed the Wawa, citing already heavy congestion.

BCIT Medford Unveils $8M Expansion, Gaming Design Lab

A ceremony will mark the completion of an $8 million renovation and expansion at the Burlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT) Medford campus, which includes a new video game design lab. The construction at the Hawkins Road campus also included upgrades to welding and HVAC shops, with the new lab serving both the video game design program and the school’s Esports competition team.

Additionally, BCIT is working on a $14 million, 39,000-square-foot expansion at the Westampton campus, which will add classroom space, a logistics training area, and a large diesel engine garage. The Medford campus’ video game design program currently has 17 students, with plans to expand to 56. The Esports team has 25 members.

Mount Laurel Seeks Renewal of Open Space Tax

Mount Laurel Township Council is considering renewing its municipal tax for open space acquisition, preservation, and maintenance by placing the decision before voters in the November general election. According to the ordinance set for review on March 3, the Council acknowledges that preserving open space benefits both current and future residents. Mount Laurel’s open space tax was first approved by voters in 1999. The fund supports land acquisition for recreation and conservation, as well as farmland and historic property preservation.

In 2024, the township collected $2.34 million in open space taxes—consistent with the previous year but half of what was collected from 2020 to 2022. The tax rate has been four cents per $100 in assessed value for the past two years, down from eight cents between 2020 and 2022. The proposal on the November 4 ballot would set a maximum open space tax rate of four cents per $100 in assessed value.

Located on Swedesboro Road, the project will feature a 32-foot clear ceiling height, 15 loading positions, two drive-in doors, and 1,600 amps of 480-volt power. With final site plan approval secured, Faropoint aims to address the strong demand and limited supply in the South Jersey and greater Philadelphia logistics market. The site was identified through Faropoint’s expertise in last-mile logistics and its proprietary sourcing platform. Wendy Banscher of Fox & Roach LP represented the sellers in the transaction.

In 1970, the developer of the Echelon Mall envisioned the $80 million, 400-acre development — featuring retail, housing, office space, and recreational facilities — as a prototype for a new kind of suburban downtown. F. Aubrey Gorman, vice president of the Rouse Co., which also developed the Cherry Hill Mall and Philadelphia’s original Gallery at Market East, expressed optimism in a local newspaper, stating that Echelon “offers the hope that many municipalities can create town centers from scratch.”

In the decades since Echelon’s opening in Voorhees Township, however, such suburban downtowns have remained rare, while numerous shopping malls have risen and fallen. Yet, some, like Granite Run in Delaware County and Moorestown in Burlington County, are seeing a resurgence, revitalized with new retail, housing, medical facilities, entertainment, and other mixed-use developments.
