The future of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier took a step forward as Ocean City Council voted to allow the local planning board to begin evaluating potential redevelopment options for the iconic Boardwalk property. In a 4–3 vote, councilmembers approved referring the 600 Boardwalk Avenue site to the Ocean City Planning Board for review of possible rehabilitation.
City officials emphasized that the referral marks only the initial phase of what could become a lengthy evaluation process.
“This is basically a first step in what could potentially be an extensive review process, if it were to continue to move forward,” said Doug Bergen, Ocean City’s public information officer.
Voting in favor of the referral were City Council President Terry Crowley Jr. along with councilmembers Jody Levchuk, Tony Polcini, and Pete Madden. Councilmembers Keith Hartzell, Dave Winslow, and Sean Barnes voted against the measure.
The planning board’s review will focus on assessing redevelopment or rehabilitation opportunities for the former amusement pier, a longtime Ocean City landmark, as the city considers future uses for the Boardwalk property.
