A former concrete manufacturing plant in Voorhees Township will be redeveloped into a $50 million affordable housing community. The project, known as The Oaks at Centennial, will introduce 120 apartments to the Centennial Boulevard corridor.
The Camden-based Michaels Organization recently secured planning board approval for the redevelopment. The project will transform a vacant industrial property into a new multifamily residential community.
Operating through Centennial Housing Associates LLC, the developer received preliminary and final major site plan approvals. The Voorhees Planning Board also approved a minor subdivision associated with the development.
Plans call for constructing The Oaks at Centennial in two phases. Each phase will include 60 affordable apartments, bringing the total development to 120 residential units.
The proposed community will occupy approximately 6.6 acres previously used for concrete manufacturing operations.
For decades, L&L Redi Mix Concrete operated a production facility at the property. The company supplied concrete for construction projects throughout South Jersey.
In December 2021, Pennsylvania-based Silvi Concrete acquired L&L Redi Mix and its regional operations. At the time, the 55-year-old company operated six New Jersey concrete plants.
Those facilities included locations in Voorhees, Southampton, Woodbury, Cinnaminson, Kingston, and Clayton. The Voorhees plant subsequently closed, leaving the Centennial Boulevard property vacant.
Now, the approved redevelopment will replace the former industrial facility with residential housing.
The project represents another example of industrial property repositioning in South Jersey’s commercial real estate market. As older manufacturing sites become obsolete, developers continue exploring alternative uses for underutilized properties.
Additionally, the redevelopment will contribute to Voorhees Township’s expanding residential development pipeline.
Several multifamily projects have recently advanced throughout the township. These include the approved conversion of Four Echelon Plaza into 178 market-rate apartments.
Other proposals include a 117-unit senior apartment community near SpringHill Suites and a 60-unit affordable housing development near AMC Voorhees.
Together, these projects demonstrate continued developer interest in multifamily housing throughout Camden County.
For Voorhees, The Oaks at Centennial represents a substantial investment in affordable housing and property redevelopment. The project will replace a vacant industrial site while introducing new residential opportunities.
Although the planning board has approved the development, construction and completion timelines have not yet been announced.
The $50 million project marks another step in the ongoing transformation of underutilized commercial and industrial properties across South Jersey.
